Does a five-page business website actually need a sitemap?

Not strictly, but it costs nothing. Google's documentation says a site of about 500 pages or fewer, fully linked from the home page, might not need a sitemap, yet adds that most sites benefit from having one. A new site with few external links is a clear case. No sitemap guarantees indexing. PROOF48 includes one in every 48-hour site.

01What Google says about small sites

Google Search Central's sitemap overview, last updated 10 December 2025, says that if a site's pages are properly linked, Google can usually discover most of it. A sitemap can still improve crawling for larger or more complex sites. Google names three cases where you might need one: a large site, a new site with few external links, and a site with a lot of video, images or news. You might not need one if your site is small, about 500 pages or fewer, if Googlebot can reach every important page by following links from the home page, and if you have few media pages you want shown in search. Five pages is nowhere near the line.

  • You might need one: a large site, a new site with few external links, a site with a lot of video, images or news
  • You might not need one: about 500 pages or fewer, every important page reachable by links from the home page, few video, image or news pages
  • A five-page site with working navigation sits well inside the second list
  • A brand-new five-page site with no external links also sits in the first

02Why a five-page site gets one anyway

Because it is one file, it costs nothing to keep, and it gives you something to check. Google says the Sitemaps report in Search Console shows when Googlebot accessed the sitemap and any processing errors. On a new site, with few links pointing in, you hand crawlers a direct list of your addresses instead of waiting for them to follow links. PROOF48's 48-hour site includes a sitemap in its basic SEO structure, next to meta tags and headings. On proof48.com it is a static file with real lastmod dates and hreflang.

  • One file, announced with a Sitemap line in robots.txt or submitted in Search Console
  • Search Console shows when Googlebot read it and any processing errors

03What a sitemap does not do

Google's wording is plain: "A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs on your site, but it doesn't guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed." It is a list, and we make no claim that it moves your site up the results. Two fields people fill in out of habit are ignored, because Google ignores priority and changefreq. The lastmod date is used only if it is consistently and verifiably accurate, and it should reflect the last significant update to the page. Stamping the build date on every address does not. If a page is thin or nobody searches for it, a sitemap changes none of that.

  • A sitemap helps discovery; Google does not promise to crawl or index everything in it
  • Google ignores priority and changefreq
  • lastmod counts only when it is consistently and verifiably accurate
  • We promise no Google position from a sitemap or from anything else

04Check yours in ten minutes, and when not to pay anyone

Try yourdomain.ro/sitemap.xml in a browser. Google lets you host a sitemap anywhere on your site, so your CMS may use another name, and your robots.txt may point to it with a Sitemap line. Google also notes that most content management systems generate a sitemap automatically, so you may already have one. Then open Search Console, go to the Sitemaps report and read the status. Do not buy a monthly plan for this. It is a one-off job for you or your developer. We are the wrong choice if your real problem is that nobody searches for what you sell, because no file fixes that.

  • Try /sitemap.xml, then look in robots.txt for a Sitemap line
  • If your CMS made one, check that it lists your real pages
  • Submit it in Search Console and read the Sitemaps report
  • Do not pay for a monthly plan just to get a sitemap

A salon site where the sitemap declared 21 video clips

SCP Shine & Style, a beauty salon in Sector 3, Bucharest, was rebuilt by PROOF48 with its old WordPress URLs redirected 301 and 21 salon video clips declared in the sitemap so Search Console counts them. Video is the rich-media case Google describes, and it is where a sitemap can add information. We do not publish the salon's revenue or booking counts, because we do not measure them.

Questions, answered

Does a five-page website need a sitemap?

Google's documentation says a small site that is fully linked from the home page might not. A new site with few external links is a case where it helps. Either way it is one file and costs nothing to keep.

Will a sitemap make my site rank higher?

We make no such claim. Google describes a sitemap as helping search engines discover URLs, and says it does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

How do I tell Google about my sitemap?

Submit it in Search Console's Sitemaps report, or add a Sitemap line to your robots.txt. Google lists both, plus the Search Console API.

Should I fill in priority and changefreq?

No. Google ignores both. Keep lastmod, but only if it is accurate: it should reflect the last significant update to the page.

Where PROOF48 fits

By Google's own documentation, a small site that is fully linked from the home page might not need a sitemap, but a new site with few links pointing in is better off with one, and it costs a single file. No sitemap guarantees crawling or indexing, and none buys a position. PROOF48's 48-hour sites include a sitemap in their basic SEO structure, and our free technical audit checks the one you already have.
