A custom GPT is not the same thing as a business AI assistant

A custom GPT is ChatGPT set up with your instructions and files, and people use it inside ChatGPT. A business AI assistant works in your own channels, such as website chat, DMs and email, answers from rules you approved, books into your real calendar and hands unusual cases to a person. PROOF48's AUTOMATE plan, 2,997 EUR a month, covers website chat, DM and email.

01What a custom GPT is, and what it does well

A custom GPT is ChatGPT configured once: a set of instructions, some uploaded files for it to draw on, and sometimes actions that call other tools. Campus Technology's report on OpenAI's migration lists exactly those parts: instructions, knowledge files, connected apps and custom actions. It is good for a private job. Drafting in your house tone, answering staff questions from a handbook you uploaded, checking a document against a checklist. One person or a small team opens it inside ChatGPT, asks, and reads the answer with their own eyes before anything goes out.

  • Instructions, knowledge files and optional actions, set up once
  • Best as a private helper: drafts, internal questions, checking a document
  • A person opens it, asks, and reads the answer before anything leaves the building

02Where it stops being a business assistant

A customer does not open ChatGPT to ask your salon whether Saturday is free. They write in the website chat, in a DM or by email, and a custom GPT does not sit in any of those places by default. Actions can reach other systems, but someone has to build and maintain each connection, and that is the part that makes it a project rather than a setting. Then comes the question of what happens when it is wrong: who sees the conversation, who is told, who takes over. A custom GPT has none of that built in. A business assistant is mostly that surrounding work.

  • Customers write on your site, in DMs and by email, not inside ChatGPT
  • Each connection to a calendar or CRM is something someone builds and maintains
  • Who reads the conversations, and who takes over, is not part of the GPT

03What a real business assistant is made of

Our AI assistant page describes the work. We spend a week reading how clients actually write to you, build an assistant for each channel that knows your business rules and when to hand off to a person, and run every case through it before launch, including unhappy clients and half-finished requests. After launch you see every conversation it handled, sorted into answered, escalated and unanswered. The first month is learning. That list is what separates an assistant from a chat window: approved answers, your real calendar, a handoff rule and a log somebody reads.

  • A week spent reading how clients really write to you
  • One assistant per channel, with a rule for when a person takes over
  • Every case tested before launch, including unhappy clients
  • A weekly review of conversations: answered, escalated, unanswered

04A feature of someone else's product can change on their schedule

Campus Technology reported on 5 October 2026 that OpenAI has announced it is preparing to retire Custom GPTs in favour of plugins, with retirement currently scheduled for 11 December 2026 and timing that can vary by account and workspace. The same report says conversations do not migrate, sharing settings do not carry over, and a migrated plugin may respond differently. We are relying on the press report, not on OpenAI's own notice, so check your account for the date that applies to you. The lesson does not depend on the date: if customers reach you through a feature you do not control, keep your instructions and approved answers in documents that belong to you.

  • Retirement of Custom GPTs is currently scheduled for 11 December 2026, per Campus Technology (5 October 2026)
  • Conversations and sharing settings do not migrate, and a migrated plugin may respond differently
  • Keep instructions and approved answers in files you own

05Where PROOF48 is the wrong choice for this

If you want a private helper for yourself or your team, such as drafts in your tone or answers from an internal handbook, a custom GPT or plain ChatGPT is probably enough, and AUTOMATE is the wrong buy. We do not quote OpenAI's prices because OpenAI sets and changes them. AUTOMATE costs 2,997 EUR a month and includes everything in GROWTH, so it is heavy for a business that gets a handful of messages a week. It covers website chat, DM and email, booking and a CRM. It does not cover WhatsApp or phone calls: a standalone WhatsApp or voice assistant is a custom build, priced on request. No website yet? The 48-hour site comes first, 500 to 2,500 EUR, paid after the preview.

  • A private helper for you or your team: a custom GPT or ChatGPT is likely enough
  • AUTOMATE is 2,997 EUR a month and includes everything in GROWTH
  • WhatsApp and phone are not in AUTOMATE; a standalone WhatsApp or voice assistant is a custom build, priced on request
  • We do not build assistants to give medical, legal or financial advice

Not an AI build: what a system that talks to customers is made of

None of our eight written-up builds is an AI assistant, and we claim no results for one. The closest in spirit is Rotiseria Baba Novac. Its ordering system holds a menu the restaurant manages, lets the customer pick a pickup slot at checkout, sends a confirmation email on every order and gives the customer order tracking. Those are the ingredients of anything that talks to customers: records the business owns, actions that fire on real events, and an owner who controls the content. A custom GPT with a menu uploaded as a file has only a copy of the first. We do not publish Rotiseria's order volume.

Questions, answered

Can a custom GPT answer my customers on its own?

Not by default. People use a custom GPT inside ChatGPT, so it does not watch your website chat, DMs or email, and it does not book into your calendar unless someone builds that link and keeps it working.

Is a custom GPT useless for a business?

No. For private work such as drafts, rewrites and questions about an internal document, it can be all you need. It becomes the wrong tool when customers are the ones asking.

What happens when the assistant does not know the answer?

It says so and hands the conversation to a person. Before launch you decide what triggers the handoff, such as the topic or the time of day.

Does PROOF48 build custom GPTs?

No. Custom GPTs are not part of any PROOF48 plan. Our assistants are built per channel, on your site chat, DMs and email. A WhatsApp or voice assistant is a separate custom build, priced on request.

Where PROOF48 fits

A custom GPT is a configured ChatGPT that people use inside ChatGPT, which suits private work. A business assistant lives in your own channels, answers from rules you approved, uses your real calendar and hands unusual cases to a person who reads the log. PROOF48's AUTOMATE plan, at 2,997 EUR a month, covers website chat, DM, email, booking and a CRM, and we say plainly when ChatGPT is enough.
