AI agent, chatbot or "AI employee": what is actually being sold?

A chatbot answers questions in one channel. An agent is software where the AI model chooses its own steps and uses tools to finish a task. 'AI employee' is a sales label, not a technical category. PROOF48's AUTOMATE plan, 2,997 EUR a month, lists functions: site chat, DM and email, booking, CRM. It leaves out WhatsApp and phone.

01Chatbot, workflow, agent: three amounts of freedom

Anthropic draws the line in its engineering guide 'Building effective agents' (December 2024). Workflows are 'systems where LLMs and tools are orchestrated through predefined code paths.' Agents are 'systems where LLMs dynamically direct their own processes and tool usage.' So the useful question is not whether something is called an agent, but who decides the next step: your fixed rules or the model. The same guide recommends finding 'the simplest solution possible' and warns that agents bring 'higher costs, and the potential for compounding errors.' A chatbot is the simplest case. It reads a message and answers inside one channel.

  • Chatbot: reads a message and answers inside one channel
  • Workflow: fixed steps you can test, with a model writing the wording
  • Agent: the model picks its own steps and tools, which costs more and can let errors pile up
  • Ask who decides the next step, not what the product is called

02What "AI employee" promises, and what to ask instead

'AI employee' has no technical meaning. It is a way to make a subscription feel like a hire. A person can sign a contract, be told no, and answer for a mistake. Software can do none of those, so the owner of the business still answers for what it says to customers. Instead of asking whether it is an employee, ask five plain questions: which tasks it does alone, which tools and data it can touch, what it does when it is not sure, who reads its conversations, and who is responsible when it is wrong. A vendor who answers those in writing is selling you something you can check.

  • Which tasks does it do alone, and which does it only prepare for a person?
  • Which tools and data can it touch: calendar, CRM, email, customer records?
  • What does it do when it is unsure, and who is the named person it hands off to?
  • Who reads the conversations, and how often?

03What AUTOMATE actually contains

PROOF48 does not sell an employee. AUTOMATE, at 2,997 EUR a month (29,970 EUR billed annually), includes everything in GROWTH and adds an AI chatbot on your website that qualifies and books, AI auto-responders for DMs and email, booking automation with a CRM, comment moderation, automated review management and two custom automations a month. Each one is a function you can tick off a list. It is also a large bundle: GROWTH alone includes ad management and AI blog posts, so AUTOMATE is built for a business that wants the whole stack, not just a chat window. WhatsApp and phone calls sit outside it.

  • Included: website chatbot that qualifies and books, AI DM and email auto-responders
  • Included: booking automation with a CRM, comment moderation, automated review management
  • Included: two custom automations a month, and everything in GROWTH
  • Not included: WhatsApp and phone calls. A standalone WhatsApp or voice assistant is a custom build, priced on request

04Where PROOF48 is the wrong choice

Do not buy from us if you want software that runs the business unattended. We sell defined functions with a handoff to a person, not an autonomous agent making decisions about money or customers. It is also wrong if your customers mostly reach you on WhatsApp or by phone, because AUTOMATE does not cover those channels. And it is wrong when every case needs judgment: medical, legal or financial advice, or any channel where a wrong answer creates legal or safety risk. We refuse builds we can see failing from day one. If you have no website yet, start there: up to about five pages, 500 to 2,500 EUR, built in 48 hours and paid for only after you see the preview.

  • Wrong if you want an autonomous system that runs the business unattended
  • Wrong if customers mostly use WhatsApp or the phone: AUTOMATE does not cover them
  • Wrong for medical, legal or financial advice, where a person must answer
  • No website yet: the 48-hour site comes first, 500 to 2,500 EUR

A fixed skin quiz instead of an open conversation

Korean Cosmetics is the closest example we have. The written-up build includes a five-question skin quiz that matches a visitor to the right product line, and every product claim was rewritten across 12 languages to satisfy EU cosmetics regulation. We read that as a case where a fixed, testable flow suits the job better than an open conversation improvising about ingredients. That is our interpretation, not a measured result. The store is in pre-launch, so we have no sales figures for the quiz and will not invent any.

Questions, answered

Is an AI agent better than a chatbot?

Not by default. Anthropic's guide says to find the simplest solution possible and add complexity only when needed, because agentic systems often trade latency and cost for better task performance, and agents bring higher costs and the potential for compounding errors. For a fixed set of repeated questions, a tested chatbot or workflow usually fits better.

Can PROOF48 build an AI employee that runs my business?

No. We build defined functions: website chat, DM and email replies, booking and a CRM, with a handoff to a person. We do not sell an autonomous system that makes business decisions for you.

Does AUTOMATE include WhatsApp or phone calls?

No. AUTOMATE covers website chat, DM and email auto-responders, booking automation and a CRM. A standalone WhatsApp or voice assistant is a custom build, priced on request.

Who is responsible when the assistant gets something wrong?

The business that deployed it. Decide in advance what it may answer, make it hand off the rest to a named person, and have someone read the conversations. Where your sector has strict rules, ask the licensed professional or your lawyer before it goes live.

Where PROOF48 fits

A chatbot answers in one channel, an agent chooses its own steps, and 'AI employee' is a label with no technical meaning, so judge any offer by its list of functions, its handoff and who reads the conversations. PROOF48's AUTOMATE plan, at 2,997 EUR a month, lists website chat, DM and email, booking and a CRM, not WhatsApp or phone, and we say so when a simpler setup would serve you better.
